THE HOWARD GROUP
Newcastle University

OVERVIEW
We pursue a range of activities relating to the engineering of biological systems. Key research topics include understanding carbon metabolism with a view to carbon capture and conversion to sustainable petrochemicals, and transposing molecular biology phenomenon from living systems into materials. This research has applications in novel sensor technologies and bio inspired multifunctional materials.
To facilitate these goals we employ a combination of statistical Design of Experiments (DOE) to interrogate highly interacting, multifactorial systems, and laboratory automation, to improve the reproducibility and ambition of our experimental designs.
We are committed to developing a supportive environment in which the next generation of biotechnologists gain hands-on experience of project development and delivery. We are strong advocates of student-led research and 'active learning' at all stages.
